ABANDONMENT to God’s Providence is one of the essential things a Christian must do. It can also turn out to be one of the hardest things for us to do. However, by surrendering to God’s goodwill towards us and others, we can proceed to be free from our cares and troubles. The Lord Jesus Christ emphasized the need for our abandonment to Divine Providence several times, specifically when referring to the concerns of the world.
I clarify that abandonment to God’s providence is not an attitude of resignation to adversity or similar. On the contrary, it is calmly focusing on our work to carry out God’s will in our lives and within the world, primarily through acts of Charity, despite the obstacles that may arise. We strive to do the best we can in alignment with His will and trust in God that He will do the rest.
To facilitate this act of abandonment, Saint Josemaría Escrivá, the Saint of Ordinary Life, wrote the prayer below. I find this prayer extremely concise and beautiful and recommend incorporating it into anyone’s morning prayers. I also recommend reciting it whenever we are facing any issues, especially if they seem impossible to overcome. I am sure this practice will be of great help to us on our Roads to Righteousness.
Abandonment to God’s Providence
My Lord and my God:
Into your hands, I abandon the past and the present and the future,
what is small and what is great,
what amounts to a little and what amounts to a lot,
things temporal and things eternal.
Amen
