The Guardian Angel Prayer

THE Guardian Angel Prayer is a traditional Catholic prayer that gives thanks to God for providing us with a guardian.  It then proceeds to ask our Guardian Angel to protect us, and guide us along our Road to Righteousness.

Angels are real, and even our Lord Jesus testified to them and their blessedness in Mathew 18:10 when he said that “angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.”  The Church also reaffirms their existence and their assignment as our guardians. As can be seen within the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which states:

“From infancy to death human life is surrounded by their (the angels) watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. Already here on earth, the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united to God.”

Catechism of the Catholic Church; 336

I have never seen my guardian angel, but I have felt him and heard him. He always seems to be right behind my right shoulder whenever this happens.  I have written some of those experiences in my article “Experiences with Jesus.”

We should all incorporate the Guardian Angel Prayer into our daily prayers. I find it sad to see how infrequently we acknowledge and thank our angels. However, I can testify to the efficacy and importance of this prayer.  I have noticed that the days when I pray it flow a lot better, as well as it being more natural for me to follow the inspirations of the Holy Spirit.

Following is the prayer as taught by the Catholic Church:

Guardian Angel Prayer

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide.

Amen
