The Luminous Mysteries – The Holy Rosary

THE LUMINOUS Mysteries of the Holy Rosary allow us to meditate on the ministry of Jesus Christ. Let us remember that the Holy Rosary is Mary’s testimony of Jesus: her experiences of His life, His ministry, and the Gospel.

It is traditional to pray the Luminous Mysteries on Thursdays. Also, the Catholic Church has attached specific graces that we can receive through the meditation of the mysteries of the Rosary and applying them to our lives.

The Luminous Mysteries were instituted by Saint John Paul II, well after the time of St. Louis de Montfort. To harmonize it with the other mysteries, below I provide the Luminous Mysteries adapting them to the method of Saint Louis-Marie de Montfort, the Apostle of the Rosary.

I also include passages of Scripture and images to help us meditate on each Mystery.  I pray that this resource may be of great help to you along your Road to Righteousness.

Introductory Prayers:

Make the Sign of the Cross while praying:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen

Pray:

I unite with all the saints in Heaven, with all the just on earth, and with all the faithful here present. I unite with Thee, O my Jesus, in order to praise worthily Thy holy Mother and to praise Thee in her and through her.

I renounce all the distractions I may have during this Rosary, which I wish to say with modesty, attention, and devotion, just as if it were to be the last of my life.

We offer Thee; O most Holy Trinity, this Creed in honor of all the mysteries of our Faith; this Our Father and these three Hail Mary in honor of the unity of Thy Essence and the Trinity of Thy Persons.

We ask of Thee a lively faith, a firm hope, and an ardent charity.

Amen

Scripture NRSV – Matthew 3,13-17

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”

Scripture NRSV – John 2,1-11

1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. 9 When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

Scripture NRSV – Matthew 17,1-8

1 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. 3 Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud, a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him, I am well pleased; listen to him!” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” 8 And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone.

26 While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will never again drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

30 When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Concluding Prayer

Hail Mary, beloved Daughter of the Eternal Father; admirable Mother of the Son; faithful Spouse of the Holy Ghost; august Temple of the Most Holy Trinity.

Hail Sovereign Princess, to whom all owe subjection in Heaven and on Earth!

Hail sure refuge of sinners, Our Lady of Mercy, who hast never refused any request.

All sinful though I am, I cast myself at thy feet and beseech thee to obtain from Jesus, thy beloved Son, contrition, and pardon for all my sins, as well as the gift of divine wisdom.

I consecrate myself entirely to Jesus, through thee, with all that I have. I choose thee today for my Mother and Mistress. Treat me then, as the least of thy children, and the most obedient of thy servants.

Listen, my princess, listen to the sighs of a heart that desires to love and serve thee faithfully. Let it never be said that of all who have had recourse to thee, I was the first to be abandoned.

O my hope, O my life, O my faithful and Immaculate Virgin Mary, defend me, nourish me, hear me, teach me, and save me.

Amen
